OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The project aims to bridge the digital divide in Northern Malawi, a region with limited and expensive internet access (15% penetration, USD $2.42/GB). It will be achieved by building a mesh Wi-Fi network across 50 schools and providing Internet access and digital learning centers to students and staff. The project also aims to create a self-sustainable community network by allowing schools to resell prepaid Internet vouchers to surrounding communities at a significantly lower cost compared to current options.
WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?
The project enables educational resources, communication tools, and economic opportunities by providing schools and communities with affordable Internet connectivity. Additionally, the project promotes digital inclusion by establishing digital learning centers in schools, equipping teachers with digital skills, and offering affordable Internet access for the community. The project also fosters sustainability by utilizing a mesh network with lower infrastructure costs and allowing schools to generate income through Internet voucher sales. This ensures long-term project viability without ongoing grant dependence. Finally, the project introduces innovative solutions for Internet access in remote areas, like utilizing air fiber technology and low-orbit satellite backhaul. These innovations have the potential to be replicated in other underserved regions.
