The Internet has the potential to revolutionize learning, but more than access is needed. This is where Fundación SOLE Colombia, a grantee of the Internet Society Foundation’s BOLT program, comes in. They created a SOLE Lab, a physical space where people can access and use the Internet collaboratively to answer questions important to the community.
Sanjay Fernandes, the founder of SOLE Colombia, explains: “The SOLE Lab is a solution for communities that do not have a public space with an Internet connection. It is a way of enhancing people’s opportunity to connect, but what’s interesting is not only giving the Internet connection but also a reason to use it, which is to answer questions.”
Self-Organized Learning Environments
SOLE stands for a self-organized learning environment. The SOLE Lab is a community hub where people can learn from each other and explore their curiosity. “The SOLE Lab is our version of what the library of the future would be like,” says Fernandes.
The BOLT grant provided by the Internet Society Foundation proved to be a pivotal moment for SOLE Colombia. Fernandes said the grant enabled them to experiment and develop a prototype. As a result, the community can now self-organize in their own space and utilize the Internet.
Empowering Communities and Preserving Culture
The SOLE Lab is placed in Boca de Camarones, La Guajira, Colombia. For over seven years, SOLE Ambassador Elainer Ipuana has used the SOLE methodology with children and youth. They’ve explored topics like programming, environmental education, and tourism while incorporating their Wayuú ancestral knowledge and culture.
“You realize people’s curiosity has always been there. The SOLE Lab permits them to let it grow and do whatever they can with it. That’s the most amazing thing.”

The Internet connection provided by the SOLE Lab has had a tangible impact on the community. They can now access government services that previously required a long trip to the nearest town. The children use it for schoolwork, and it allows everyone to stay connected with family and friends in other regions.
The Power of Curiosity and Collaboration
The story of SOLE Colombia highlights the Internet’s transformative power when combined with a supportive learning environment. “Every time there is something new,” says Fernandes, “you realize people’s curiosity has always been there. The SOLE Lab permits them to let it grow and do whatever they can with it. That’s the most amazing thing.”
By fostering self-organized learning and collaboration, SOLE Labs empowers communities in rural Colombia to connect with the world, preserve their culture, and build a brighter future.
